Tender (tend-der), n. A small boat accompanying a yacht or other pleasure vessel, used to transport persons, gear and supplies; a dinghy. Whether you are a weekend sailor or a live aboard cruiser, a raggie or a stink-potter, you will use a tender to ferry you, your crew and your gear between ship and shore. The tender is your car. If you prefer anchorages to marinas it's a vital adjunct to the mother ship. It has a direct influence on your enjoyment of the water and the boating life. Choose wisely. Your tender might be a hard dinghy, a soft inflatable or a RIB. Its size and shape will be largely determined by your ability to lift and handle it. Like everything to do with boats it will be a compromise: For the purpose of carrying crew and gear, big and stable is better, but to lift it and stow it, small and light wins hands down. I sometimes think it would be easier to buy the tender you want and then pick a boat to carry it! Larger boats with buoyant sterns can carry their tender on davits, others will choose to stow their dinghy on the fore deck or cabin top. Inflatable tenders can be deflated; hard dinghies can be of the nesting type that split in two with the two halves fitting into each other, or you might consider a folding boat. Power can come from the wind, a pair of oars or an outboard motor. Whatever your choice, we hope that this range of tried and tested products will enhance the safety and functionality of your tender.
